How to Make Homemade Rolled Fondant

Fondant is a type of cake decorating icing that is comprised mostly of confectioners' sugar and gelatin. It's much like a chewy, creamy sugar paste. Fondant is very popular with cake decorators because of its versatility and smooth, silky appearance. While it can be pretty difficult to get a perfectly smooth finish with a spatula and regular frosting, fondant makes the job much easier.

Besides its main use for covering entire cakes, fondant can also be used for covering cookies and cupcakes. Fondant can also be shaped into edible shapes and figures. When used for cakes, fondant tends to seal in freshness and is popular for weddings and outdoor events because the cake usually holds up better during hot or humid conditions for short periods of time.

You can find ready-made fondant online and at many cake decorating stores. While this option is less time-consuming, most people agree that the store-bought variety is also less tasty. If you're facing a time crunch and understand that most people will peel off your fondant so they can eat your cake, buying ready-made fondant might be a good choice. However, if you have some extra time and would rather have people eat your entire work of art, it's probably worth it to make your fondant from scratch.

First, gather the following ingredients:

¼ oz. package unflavored gelatin
3 tablespoons cold water
½ cup corn syrup
1 tablespoon glycerin
2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
1 teaspoon clear pure vanilla extract
8 cups sifted confectioners' sugar (you may not use all 8 cups)

Mix together the gelatin and cold water in a medium bowl and let the mixture stand. Once it starts to thicken, transfer the mixture to a double boiler and stir continuously over medium heat until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Now, add the corn syrup and glycerin until all ingredients are completely mixed. Stir in the shortening and right before it looks like the shortening has completely melted, remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla. If you want to color your fondant you should add that with the vanilla. You can also substitute different flavors for the vanilla. Now, let the mixture cool until it reaches about 90 degrees F.

Once the mixture has cooled, place 4 cups of the confectioners' sugar in a large bowl. Using a wooden spoon, make a well in the center of the sugar and pour the mixture in the center. Gradually pull the sugar from the edge of the bowl into the mixture until it all becomes incorporated. If the mixture seems extremely sticky add ½ cup sugar at a time.

Spread a layer of shortening onto your work surface and transfer the fondant so you can start kneading the mixture by hand. You want to knead the fondant until it feels smooth, workable, and doesn't stick to your hands. If you think it feels too soft, add more sugar. If it feels too stiff, add one drop of water at a time. You can use the fondant right away or store it in an air tight container in the refrigerator. Make sure whenever you're ready, that the fondant is brought to room temperature and kneaded until it's soft and pliable again. Your fondant is now ready to be rolled and placed onto your cake.

You may be afraid to work with fondant for the first time but just like anything else you'll become more confident with practice. You can find more information on decorating cakes with fondant and other cake decorating ideas by visiting my website: Cake Decorating Tips

How To Bake A Perfect Elmo Birthday Cake At Ease

Are you a parent thinking about getting an Elmo birthday cake for your child? Why not take the time to bake the Elmo birthday cake yourself? The task of making a cake themed to Elmo or any other character is easy to do. By making the Elmo birthday cake you are really personalizing your child’s birthday and adding an extra special effect when it comes to your child’s birthday cake. Making a Elmo cake also gives your child’s birthday cake a entertaining and fun appearance and it is a cake that will be far more appreciated when compared to an ordinary rectangular or round, homemade cake.

Making an Elmo-themed birthday cake is super fun and amazingly easily to do. You don’t have to be a professional baker to bring a smile to your child’s face. There are a number of ways for you to quickly make a baked cake in to an Elmo birthday cake within minutes. You might choose edible cake topper designs which are made of sugar which can be laid across the surface of a cake. Instantly you will have an Elmo birthday cake that your child will appreciate. You can also get several different, small, washable, and reusable Elmo figurines which can be rested on top of the cake’s surface too. The latter methods are two, super fast and simplistic ways to create the Elmo birthday cake you desire.

Elmo cake rings are another cake decoration that can turn a simple cake into an Elmo birthday cake in moments. The cake rings can be inserted into the surface or top of the cake and a parent’s cake decorating endeavor is finished in seconds. If you are into baking and cake decorating, you can get a cake pan in the shape of Elmo. When the cake is baked and completely cooled, you can then use a variety of colored frostings and can apply the colored frosting via frosting applicators. The latter method is a bit more time consuming, but the finished product is attractive, fun, and quite an achievement: definitely a cake that will build lasting birthday memories!

To learn more about Elmo Birthday Cake, I recommend you checking out Shop Elmo. It is a specialized Elmo toys and Elmo products for sale site that lists up to the minute deals on the Elmo-themed products and gifts. Be sure to try this website first.

Easy, Homemade Birthday Cakes for Kids - Beginners Welcome!

Have you ever dreamed of making the perfect cake for your kid's birthday? I remember as a child how thrilled I always was with my Mom's wonderful birthday cake creations and I vowed to make my own kids' cakes once I had my own family. I loved the idea of making a really personalized, homemade cake rather than ordering the traditional sheet cake from our local grocery store. I was nervous starting out but soon realized that with a little patience and practice anyone can do this!

Here are some helpful hints that will allow even the busiest moms to bake the perfect birthday cake for their child:

1.) Don't make your cake from scratch. You can save plenty of time by buying the boxed cake mixes and they often taste just as good as a cake made from scratch. In fact, at my most recent kid birthday party I was even asked for my cake recipe because it was so yummy!

2.) Start by using a shaped character pan. They generally have very detailed and easy-to-follow directions. You can also buy them fairly cheaply (check out eBay for affordable used and retired pans).

3.) Use pre-made decorator or royal icing. I like Wilton's decorator icing since it tastes good and is great for piping since it holds its shape well and dries fairly hard.

4.) Use pre-made and pre-colored fondant. My favorite is Satin Ice since it has a nice vanilla flavor; unlike some other pre-made fondants, and you can get it in a number of different colors. You can also flavor fondant with candy flavoring.

5.) Fun cake toppers can really make a cake sparkle. If you're making a more traditional rectangular or circular cake, you can dress it up with fun cake toppers. This is an easy and affordable way to make a theme cake.

Finally, don't be afraid to try new things!

Above all, have fun and enjoy the look of delight and pride on your child's face when they see their special cake and tell their friends that their Mommy made it just for them!
