The bridal gown designers have just completed showing their spring 2010 collections in New York. Along with a sneak peek at the latest and greatest in gowns, it is also fun to check out what the designers are showing for accessories. Some were beautiful, some unusual, and some were just plain odd. This is what you can expect to see coming in for the hottest new bridal accessories.
The runway shows that take place during New York bridal market have become a bit like other fashion shows in that the models can be overstyled and a bit too high fashion, as opposed to looking like actual brides. Some of the accessories shown with the gown designers were surely exaggerated versions of what real brides will be wearing. Many of the headpieces shown would be difficult to pull off, to say the least, but they can give you some insight into trends for more wearable headpieces that brides will enjoy.
Few veils were shown, in the traditional sense, although most real brides will choose to wear a veil, at least for the ceremony. When veils were paired with the bridal gowns, they tended to be unusual, such as the veils trimmed in black lace seen at Carolina Herrera. This could be an interesting twist on the traditional white lace trimmed veil for a bride who is fashion forward, or you could choose a similar veil with a white lace trim and still look very much in style.
Tulle was used in all sorts of inventive ways, from poufs to birdcages, most of which were short little numbers perched jauntily on top of the head. The right small veil covering only the face can be very elegant. If you have a passion for the hats of Phillip Treacy, by all means, try one of the more wild and exuberant tulle concoctions.
Even wilder were the absolutely enormous organza flower-like things perched on top of the heads of the brides at the Oscar de la Renta show. As the were styled in the show, these jumbo flowers would be nearly impossible for the average bride to pull off (and in fact, they really distracted from the gowns). However, a more true-to-life sized organza flower would make a lovely accent in a bride's hair. You can make it even prettier by adding a few pearls or crystals to the center of it to match your bridal jewelry.
There is one trend that is very popular for 2010 that is happily also very pretty and wearable. This accent is the wide fabric headband. They are being shown in all sorts of fabrics, and are often made from the same material as the wedding gown. To give them a personal touch, adorn your headband with a beautiful brooch that coordinates with the rest of your bridal jewelry. This type of special touch will elevate a fabric headband from schoolgirl to fabulous in a flash.
There was one other accessory that was wildly popular and that will cost you almost nothing: red lipstick. At show after show, the models were marching down the runway with dramatic red lipstick, which would look beautiful and sophisticated on almost any bride. Whether your taste runs to the classic, or you want to have fun with some of the more daring accessories that were shown this year, the finishing touches that you add to your wedding gown are a great way to express your personal style.
