The best advice is probably to get a professional photographer, or maybe two; one to cover the main events of the bride and groom, and one to cover the guests. There are often those small moments where the mother or friends cries, or a passionate kiss on guest couple that is great to catch as well.

If you are to use a friend you should have him/her properly prepared. The best way of training is to actually ask your friend to get experience from a professional photographer. Your friend can go to a professional photographer if he/she can come with him to wedding to observe, and maybe a secondary wedding to actually try taking some of the pictures.
The first time should be just for observing to learn, and under no circumstances should your friend ask for money; only to go along to learn the art of getting pictures.
The photographer should get to know the location, and the event that will be happening that day. Preparation and knowledge is everything to succeed in getting great pictures. And it is vitally important the photographer knows very well were he should be located to get these memories as perfect as possible. If someone is in front of him, or he is in a bad angle it might distort the entire photo.
The photographer should also be prepared for everything; having a extra camera, extra batteries, and lots of memory for the camera. There is no way to go back in time to get these pictures over again; so its vitally important there are lots of memory on his/her memory card.
Once the photographer returns it is important there are made several copies to DVD’s, CD’s or memory pens to make sure there are backups if one of the sources should fail.
It is also great if the photography’s can be fixed a bit in GIMP or Photoshop to clear up colors or other things that could be improved. However; when fixing pictures; make sure you don’t do too much. Sometimes it is plenty enough to correct colors or remove red eyes. Make sure the pictures don’t look fake or unreal by doing too much.
