A retaining wall is a structure which holds behind the ground of a building or any other structure. The retaining walls stabilize the ground and/or the rock of the movement or the erosion of downward slope and provide the support for the vertical or close relation-vertical changes of category.

Batardeaus and watertight bulkheads, structures which the water of obstacle, are sometimes also considered retaining walls. Retaining walls are generally made of masonry, hones, brick, concrete, vinyl, steel or timber structural. Moreover, any subsoil waters behind the wall which is not absorbed by a drain cause an additional horizontal water pressure on the wall.
