Learning Chinese Abacus can help children to develop very impressive arithmetic skill.
Chinese have been using abacus for hundreds of years and it is well known for its accuracy and efficiency. Learning abacus math helps to enhance the level of creativity, sensitivity and their divergent and convergent thinking. It also helps to expand their mathematical skills as well as their problem solving skills.
Abacus Math is one of arithmetic methods. It helps young children to memorize the bead of the abacus in their mind to perform calculation. After one or two years training, most young children can perform very impressive arithmetic skills such as giving an answer in one to two seconds to question like 26 x 53 or 73+26+82+55. There are three stages of Abacus Math:
1. Foundation Stage
Students have to work with the abacus using their hands. At this level, students need to spend at least 20-30 minutes a day to familiar with their tools.
2. Semi-Abstract Stage
Students need to work with different images in order to develop their Image-Memory. Then gradually, an image card (paper abacus) will be given for them to do the calculation.
3. Abstract Stage
At this level, students don't need any tools including the abacus and the image cards anymore. Calculation can be done mentally using the abacus that has been developed into their memory.
At what age are best to learn abacus math?
Studies have shown that Children are capable in learning at very young ages. In fact, children from birth to age 6 learn better and faster than older children do. And learning abacus can help to stimulate the brain development, thus lead to a better understanding of mathematical manipulation. The best starting age is 5 when the children are able to count 1-20.
