Serigraphy or silkscreen painting is a printing method which makes a sharp edge color image that requires a porous fabric and a stencil. This technique of creating prints came in vogue during the 1960s Pop Art movement. The uniqueness of this style is that any paint or ink might be used and multiple colors can be applied after each layer dries off.
The main equipment for silkscreen printing consists of bolting cloth stretched over a frame and this stencil is put over the silk screen, for support. The surface which needs to be printed on is placed at the back and colors are forced through this stencil onto the surface. Different colors can be used with a different stencil silk screen printing on the same surface in layers. It is a time consuming process as each color layer needs to be dried prior to applying a new color scheme.
The art of silkscreen printing is an ancient technique of creating artwork. It originated in the Far East and original screens were created out of absorbent fine quality silk. It was based on the Japanese form of stenciling, used mostly on textiles. In 1907, Samuel Simons took patents and modern screen printing originated on the basis of those patents. This was soon adopted by John Pilsworth (1914) in California and his works are referred to even today. These days, the method of screen printing (although using polyester screens) is used mainly in fine arts and small scale commercial printing for printing flags and banners. With changing demands and technology, screen printing has started incorporating graphic stencils.
Mostly screen patterns are created by hand and you can have any shape that you need simply by cutting plastic sheets and applying it on the screen. Other methods include creating the desired image on the screen itself. Screen printing is done mainly for ceramic objects, metal, glass, synthetic items, garments and other fabrics. It is especially beneficial in printing large graphic designs and screen printing has become more flexible, a better alternative to conventional printing methods.
Although silkscreen printing is often associated with garments, it is extensively used for decals, clocks, signboards, display stands, and billboards. It has become the preferred method of printing as the costs are low and can be utilized for printing on a variety of surfaces. Graphic screen printing is extensively being used to mass produce posters and other objects of visual display, decals catering to many industries at very low costs.
