8. Pretty labels

Manufacturers spend a lot of money designing labels to make you think their product is natural, herbal, healthy and will do amazing things if you use it. The truth is ... the information on the front of the label doesn't tell you anything about the health and safety of the ingredients inside the package. Don't base your decision on what's on the front of the label.

9. The ingredients list

This is the most important piece of information that you absolutely must read before you buy any product. The ingredient list is where you find out if the product really contains safe and healthy ingredients or not. This is not what the manufacturers wants you to read on their labels. That's why they make it so tiny you need a magnifying glass to read it. Buy one and carry it with you in your pocket or purse. Take it out when you're trying to read that microscopic print.

10. Incomplete ingredient lists

Many companies, because of increased consumer awareness of the ingredients in skin care products, will list only the known herbal and healthy ingredients on their website or in their advertisements. If you don't read carefully, you may think that what they list is the complete list of ingredients in the product ... that is until you buy the product and read the full list of ingredients on the label. Beware of this deceptive practice.

10 Points to Consider When Quoting an Office Cleaning, Part One

The question I am asked the most by individuals setting up a new cleaning company is; 'How do we go about producing a quote?' The first and most obvious step is to make an appointment to view the clean. On arrival and in discussion with the client you must determine what they require. Some clients are vague and will require prompting and others possibly have a schedule already for you. Having ascertained what needs cleaning you then need to look carefully at the site and come to some conclusion as to how long the clean will take. Outlined below are ten points to look out for which will help you with this.

• The footfall through the site

This determines how dirty the flooring will become and how much of the floor will require attention at every clean.

• Type of flooring

Hard floors take longer to clean than carpets. Carpets just need vacuuming, hard floors require vacuuming or dust mopping and then wet or damp mopping.

• Placement of workstations

This determines how easy or difficult it will be to manoeuvre around the furniture with the equipment.

• The no. of glass panes subject to finger prints

Obvious but glass pane doors and glass panels attract people's hands and therefore require continual vigilance by the cleaner.

• Placement of the bins

Can be very conveniently located for fast emptying or tucked away under desks with chairs in the way increasing the time required.

• What, and how much goes into the bins?

Paper is generally recycled in offices now but it is still surprising what actually goes in bins, if a lot of food waste then they should be emptied every day. If they are always full then a large number of rubbish bags will be generated which have to be removed from the site. Keep an eye on the weight as well.

• Where is rubbish removed to?

The bins could be quite a distance from the actual cleaning area and that time must be calculated in the cleaning time. Stairs or lifts may be involved.

• How many bags of rubbish are being removed?

This will determine how many journeys are required and consequently how much time will be spent disposing of the waste.

• Telephones, keyboards and monitors to be cleaned?

These require specialist cleaning techniques and will add to the cleaning time.

• State of the work stations (i.e. can they actually be cleaned!)

Obviously if they are cluttered they cannot be cleaned. Work out a rota with the office manager for the cleaning of the stations.

Most adults know how much to spend on birthday gifts or Mother's Day and Father's Day gifts. We have a feel for what is appropriate for baby gifts. But when it comes to wedding gifts, how much to spend may not be so easy to determine. We don't want to spend so little that we look cheap, but we don't want to spend more than we can afford just to compete with other guests.

Etiquette

With wedding gifts, how much to spend seems to be a question of etiquette. Few of us feel totally comfortable with the rules of etiquette. In other areas of life, society has moved away from such rules. Etiquette books no longer have a place on our bookshelves.

Happily, etiquette books, or at least those who read them, have a place on the Internet. By researching those sites, you can get a better idea of how much to spend on wedding gifts. You will want to remember these points.

1. Negative: Do NOT try to spend according to what your meal will cost. It is a common myth that etiquette's "rule of thumb" is to estimate how much your meal might cost and spend that much on a gift. The current (2007) price range for a meal is thought to be between $65 and $150 per person. If two of you will be attending together, you would double that amount. This is NOT true according to etiquette. Furthermore, a recent survey shows that only 10 percent of brides agree with that idea. If followed, it would mean that a couple choosing a casual affair would receive less expensive gifts simply because the reception was casual.

2. Positive: Emily Post says there is no rule. You should let your affection for the bride and groom guide you, but you should stay within your budget, and be financially responsible when you buy a wedding gift. The giving of wedding gifts is not a competition. Your gift should reflect who you are and your relationship to the bride and groom. If you cannot afford to give as much as you would like, remember that the gift can be given within the first year after the wedding. Sooner is better, of course. But with that much time, you may be able to save enough to purchase the wedding gift you would truly like to give.

U.S. National Average

In the U.S., the national averages spent on wedding gifts fall into 3 categories. Each category is determined by the relationship of the guests to the bridal couple.

1. If buying for a co-worker or a distant family member, guests tend to spend $50-$75 each on a wedding gift.

2. Those attending the wedding of a relative or friend are likely to spend $75-$100 each on a wedding gift.

3. When a close relative or close friend gets married, the wedding gift will probably cost $100-$150 or more per each guest.

This may not be appropriate in your town or city. It is good to check with peers and learn what wedding gifts customarily cost where you live.

Personal Decision

With wedding gifts, how much to spend really is a personal decision. Guests may give whatever wedding gifts they choose. You should never be guided by how much you think the bride's family will spend on the meal. You should not be guided by what others might give.

Shop for a wedding gift according to what you think the bride and groom will like, not according to the price tag. If they have registered at a local store, check the registry. If you see an item you want to buy and can afford, don't be turned away because it is the least expensive item on the registry.

Send Wedding Gifts and End the Competition

Etiquette says wedding gifts are to be sent to the bride's home. They are not to be delivered in person, either to the home or to the wedding location. If wedding gifts are delivered to the wedding location, the bride and groom should wait and open them at home in private.

Finally, whether a wedding gift costs $5 or $5,000, a well-mannered bride and groom will accept it graciously and appreciate the thoughtfulness.

Is Live Music Dying?

We spent months preparing for the Gemini Soul tour, booking performances in Phoenix, Hollywood, Fresno, Santa Cruz and Orange County. We covered it all: a publicist, advertising, free ticket give-aways, flyers, posters, concert listings, postcards. We tried holding a charity benefit. We tried having an opening band. We tried free promotional concerts at colleges. We tried passing out free admission cards on the street. And still only a scattering of people came to each show.

The people who did show up always raved about the music, as did the doormen, the bartenders, the club managers. "You're the best band I've ever seen play here, and I've heard a lot of bands," was a typical response. So where was everyone?

Live music in the United States is dying. Several decades ago, a band could count on regular club dates. Unknown jazz bands could "do the circuit" and make at least some money. Not anymore. I talked to the manager of a two-thousand seat theater. She said everyone in the industry is talking about how difficult it has become to fill venues, and speculated that people have too many entertainment options at home -- the internet, iPods, cable TV, Netflix -- that there is less incentive to go out on the town. Fewer people are willing to take a chance on unknown music. As a consequence, many venues can't afford to pay bands and expect you to play for tips -- which is fine to get a career going, but how can you sustain that?

Live music as viable entertainment hangs on in some ways. Me'Shell Ndegeocello, thank goodness, can draw a large crowd on a Monday night to San Francisco's The Independent. Festivals and cruises still feature performers (although they are increasingly interested in musicians with national reputations - which begs the question, how does one get a national reputation?). But if talented guitarists like Mick Fleetwood (co-founder of one of the most successful bands of all time, Fleetwood Mac) can fill only half of that two-thousand seat venue, and if Yoshi's resorts to giving away free tickets to Lee Ritenour's second show, where does that leave us?

Have we become too accustomed to music at the press of a button, day and night, and worse yet, many of us now expect it for free? Radiohead released their latest CD online and asked buyers to choose how much to pay. Only 38% of those who downloaded the CD paid anything. The rest -- an unbelievable 62% -- felt they should get the album for free! [Forbes.com [http://www.forbes.com/media/2007/11/05/radiohead-download-results-biz-media-cx_lh_1105bizradiohead.html]] Because of the band's stature, they still made a considerable amount of money on the sales, but at those percentages, a four-person band selling only 10,000 CDs at an average of $8 apiece would make just $30,400. That amounts to less than $8,000 per person, not including any deduction for production expenses.

I recently discovered a dozen inter-connected English-language websites based in Russia selling my music as well as music by big-name artists, unauthorized, for download for less than $1 per CD. If most musicians can't make money performing and can't even make money from CD sales online, how will our culture be able to nurture and sustain the next wave of musicians? Like climate change, we will glibly go about thinking nothing is wrong (or at least many of us will) until it is too late. We will have chopped down the tree that nurtured our music and gave it life.

Promotional Products - Printing a Logo

A frequently asked question is can you print our logo? There is no simple answer as a lot depends on several factors.

1. Which format is the logo in? The answer can vary from a hard copy letterhead to a rough idea scribbled on the back on an envelope. Since all or part of most printing processes nowadays is done digitally, the artwork has to be created electronically. Illustrator and Coral Draw are two artwork packages used as standard in the promotional products industry. Artwork has to be created, not imported, in one of these applications. JPG, TIFF and BMP files are usually too rough around the edges to be used as artwork, although a high resolution JPG may work as long as it is in black.

2. Once created as vector artwork, the artwork should be saved as an EPS file with all text converted to outlines. This is important to avoid any font issues, if the font is not converted to outlines and the font is not resident in the receiver's computer, a different font will be substituted.

3. Recent advances in artwork software means that if all else fails; a logo can be redrawn quickly and cheaply in the right format.

4. Most promotional products are printed using silk screen printing, where the image to be printed is etched onto a screen, literally made of silk and ink passes through the etched lines onto the product to form the printed image. All artwork starts out in black and it is the colour of the ink which determines the print colour. Pantone colour reference numbers are used to identify colours and maintain uniform print colours on every print run.

5. Some logos look like they have been designed to be printed on the side of a van, with no thought as to how the final result will appear if the logo has to be shrunk to fit in a small print area such as on a pen or pencil. Equally, logos with multiple print colours, including tints or graduations, may look great on the letterhead however, when it comes to printing the logo with silk screen printing onto a promotional product, the price increases with each print colour and tints or graduations cannot be printed.

6. Traditionally pens have been printed using silk screen printing, the design mostly consisting of name, address and telephone number, sometimes accompanied by a line art logo. Recent advances in digital printing technology have allowed promotional pens to be printed in full colour using digital printing. This opens up a whole new application as pens can be used as advertising pens printed with more than just contact details.
