What Do Maids Make on Average?

Are you looking into hiring a cleaning service or a maid? Or maybe you are thinking about becoming a maid yourself? One of the first questions anyone asks is what do they make?

Of course, salaries range depending on many factors. The area that the person lives in can be a huge factor in how much they make, no matter what they do. The level of experience can account for an increase in salary. Gender, age, and whether or not the person is offered benefits can also alter the amount of compensation they receive for their work. Especially relevant to the maid industry is what type of maid they are - live-in or live-out, with an agency or independent.

Generally speaking, an individual who works as a live-out maid (and some who live-in as well) are paid less than minimum wage for their efforts and hard work. This is especially true in areas where the number of illegal immigrants is high. This is work that can be done without legal authorization to work in the United States, and pay if often under the table. In addition, maids enjoy the freedom of being able to set their own hours, stay home with children, or not having to buy and/or wear business attire.

Maids who are employed by a service are going to get paid slightly above minimum wage for the area they work. They will receive more if they have experience or after they have been with the company for a certain amount of time. These maids will sometimes also have benefits like health insurance, savings plans, and paid vacation time, or even a company car.

Live-in maids often have smaller salaries than other types of maids, especially if you break it down into an hourly amount. However, most live-in maids are provided with their own room and bath, as well as paid utilities and often food. In addition, they are paid a small salary. If you factor in the cost of the rent/utilities they come out ahead of a live-out maid.

According to Payscale, Inc., owner of the world's largest employee salary database, the median annual salary of a maid in California is $51, 794 compared to an annual salary of only $18, 646 in Texas. Looking at the numbers in terms of years of experience, employees with one to four years of experience made an average of $22, 313 per year. Five to nine years of experience only increased the salary by about $3000 annually.
